The Environmental Potential of Hyper-Scale Data Centers: Using Locational Marginal CO2 Emissions to Guide Geographical Load Shifting

چکیده
Increasing demand for computing has lead to the development of large-scale, highly optimized data centers, which represent large loads in electric power network. Many major and internet companies operate multiple centers spread geographically across world. Thus, these have a unique ability shift load, thus geographically. This paper provides bottom-up load shifting model uses centers' geographic flexibility lower CO$_2$ emissions. utilizes information about locational marginal footprint electricity at individual nodes, but does not require direct collaboration with system operator. We demonstrate how calculate carbon emissions, assess efficacy our approach compared setting where bid their into centralized market. find that center can achieve substantial reductions emissions even modest shifting.

Environmental Consumer Subsidies and Potential Reductions of CO2 Emissions
In the environmental debate, global problems clearly gained importance. Successful international conventions could reduce the threats posed by acid rain, ozone depletion and hazardous wastes. Next to end-of-pipe solutions (like placing scrubbers), cleaner inputs (like low-sulphur coal), cleaner products or retrofit processes (replacing CFCs by HCFCs and HFCs) were available in due course. Acid ...
متن کاملTwo Methods for Measuring the Environmental Returns to Scale Using Data Envelopment Analysis Approach
Nowadays, the assessment of environmental performance has received considerable attention by environmental strategy advocators and decision makers. In recent years, increased emission of CO2 into the air, water pollution, and global warming are universal problems all over the world. Therefore, development of firms with less CO2 emission is an important issue of attention in every area of produc...
متن کاملMeasuring the Marginal Impact of Co2 Emissions on Atmospheric Concentrations
The response of atmospheric CO2 concentrations to an incremental increase in emissions is usually measured using an impulse response function. These functions are then used in calculating Global Warming Potentials, marginal climate damages, and CO2 timescales. It is shown here that the impulse response method implicitly double counts the effects of emissions on concentration by not properly acc...
متن کاملEstimating the Marginal Abatement Cost Curve of CO2 Emissions in China: Provincial Panel Data Analysis
This paper estimates the Marginal Abatement Cost Curve (MACC) of CO2 emissions in China based on a provincial panel for the period of 2001-2010. The provincial marginal abatement cost (MAC) of CO2 emissions is estimated using a parameterized directional output distance function. Four types of model specifications are applied to fit the MAC-carbon intensity pairs. The optimal specification contr...
